Kilvelur is a panchayat town in Nagapattinam district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is 12 km east of Tiruvarur, 12 km west of Nagapattinam and 6 km west of Sikkal a famous Muruga shrine. It is famous for its magnificent Akshyalingaswamy temple that was glorified in the immortal song of Muthuswami Dikshitar - Akshaya Linga Vibho in the Ragam Sankarabharanam.

As of 2001[update] India census[1], Kilvelur had a population of 7404. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Kilvelur has an average literacy rate of 73%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 80%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kilvelur, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. There is only one Government School for the surroundings and two English medium primary schools. For girls one High school is present under the management of HR&ce department aided by Govt.One Private ITI and TwoTeacher Training school is situate. As for as Industries are concerned Four Modern Rice Mills are present under the management of Private entrepreneurs. One new lodge with A/C rooms and meeting hall is present. Six kalyana mandapams are present. This town is on the 67 National Highway and a Railway station is also located. This town is a selection Grade Town Panchayat. Kilvelur is the newly declared Assembly Constituency in Tamilnadu. This town is 17 Kms away from Valanganni,12kms away from Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur. Thirukannagudy on of the 108 DIVYADESAM is situate 3kms away from this Town and Thevur the famous GURUSTHALAM is situate 2 kms away from this town. Bus facility is awailable throughout thday and night. Famous big BUDHAVIHAR is situate in the Town and the name of that place is BUTHARMANGALAM.
